Sequence of works
1. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
Warning! When the battery is disconnected, the memory is erased (for example radio code) all electronic storage devices.
2. Loosen the accessory drive belt and remove it from the alternator pulley. On vehicles with a V8 or V6 engine, remove the viscous fan. Unscrew the alternator mount to the engine, and lastly remove the bolt to the left of the pulley.
3. It is more convenient to remove the generator from underneath the car, so first lift the car.
4. Remove the lower engine guard.
5. Remove the protective cover from the rear of the generator and unscrew the contact connections underneath it.
6. Don't forget about the ground wire.
7. Loosen and remove the upper and lower generator mounting bolts. Tightening torque for subsequent assembly is 42 N·m.
Fig. 9.12. After unscrewing the retaining pins, it is more convenient to remove the generator from the engine compartment from below (diesel engine)
8. Remove the generator downwards (Fig. 9.12).
Driving with a faulty alternator
If the generator or voltage regulator fails, you can still continue driving. The battery will provide consumers with energy. Depending on the charge and capacity, the battery should last for about 5 hours (unless, of course, you include powerful consumers).
1. Remove the alternator connector to prevent the battery from being discharged through a faulty alternator or regulator.
2. Try not to stop unless necessary. The starter consumes especially a lot of energy. If possible, coast.
3. Do not turn on the rear window heating, fan or radio.
4. Turn on the windshield wiper and washer only when necessary.
5. In the dark, if possible, do not use high beams and fog lights.
