Sequence of works
Fig. 9.10. It is best to charge the battery with a device like this
1. Connect the positive wire terminal to the positive battery terminal, and the negative wire terminal to the negative terminal (Fig. 9.10).
2. The charging current should initially be about 10% of the battery capacity (e.g. about 8 A for a 74 Ah battery) and decrease during the charging process.
3. When charging the battery, some of the distilled water evaporates. This creates bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen. They are released through the ventilation holes in the battery cover. When they mix, an explosive gas is formed.
4. For this reason, make sure that the area where the battery is charged is well ventilated. This is especially important if a high charging current is used.
Warning! Sparks when attaching and removing the charger terminals may cause a gas explosion. Be sure to follow safety precautions.
5. The battery is fully charged if the electrolyte density does not change during two measurements taken one hour apart. After charging, check the electrolyte level in the battery. If necessary, add distilled water.
