Checking the wheel hub bearing play (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

The front wheel hubs have tapered roller bearings, while the rear wheel hubs have double-row ball bearings. They have long-term lubrication and are usually designed for more than 100,000 km of mileage. Damaged bearings are identified by a characteristic noise when the wheel rotates, which becomes louder when turning. It is often difficult to determine by the sound which axle bearing has failed. Therefore, if possible, both are replaced.

Sequence of works

1. Take hold of the wheels standing on the ground one by one at the top and try to swing them in a direction perpendicular to the car.

2. If the bearings are in good condition, there should be virtually no play.

3. If there is play, ask an assistant to press the brake and rock the wheel again. If the play has disappeared, then its cause is the wheel bearing. If it remains, then the wheel suspension needs to be checked.

4. Failed rear wheel bearings must be replaced.
