Removing
Unscrewing the bolt securing the intermediate shaft retainer
Removing the intermediate shaft retainer
Removing the intermediate shaft from the engine block
1. Remove the drive chain cover.
2. On engines with a carburetor, remove the fuel pump.
3. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
4. Using paint, apply alignment marks to the crankshaft sprocket and adjacent drive chain link.
5. On models with a single row drive chain, remove the lower chain guide.
6. Rotate the intermediate shaft sprocket until the intermediate shaft retainer bolt is visible through the hole in the sprocket.
7. Unscrew the bolt and remove the intermediate shaft retainer (see fig. Unscrewing the bolt securing the intermediate shaft retainer, Removing the intermediate shaft retainer).
8. Remove the drive chain from the intermediate shaft sprocket and remove the intermediate shaft from the engine block (see fig. Removing the intermediate shaft from the engine block).
Examination
1. Check the condition of the intermediate shaft, especially the drive surfaces of the fuel pump and the ignition distributor.
2. Check the condition of the teeth on the countershaft sprocket. The teeth on the sprocket are symmetrical and if one side of the teeth is worn out, the intermediate shaft must be replaced.
Installation
1. Install the intermediate shaft to the cylinder block. Insert the intermediate shaft retainer and secure it with the bolt, tightening it to the required torque.
2. Put the drive chain on the intermediate shaft sprocket.
3. Install the lower chain guide.
4. Check that the crankshaft sprocket and timing chain marks are aligned. Install the camshaft sprocket.
5. On models with a carburetor, install the fuel pump.
6. Install the drive chain cover.
