Removal the water pump from the engine

Removal the water pump from the engine

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery and drain the coolant from the cooling system.

2. Remove the radiator fan and auxiliary drive belt pulley from the water pump.

3. Remove the thermostat, then unscrew the thermostat housing from the cylinder head. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the drain hose from the water pump and remove the thermostat housing from the engine (see fig. Location of the clamps for fastening the bypass hose, Disconnecting the bypass hose and removing the thermostat housing).

4. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the lower radiator tank hose and the heater return hose from the water pump (see Fig. Fastening the lower radiator hose and the heater return hose to the water pump).

5. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the auxiliary hose from the left side of the water pump.

6. On early models with multiple accessory drive belts, remove the magnetic clutch from the water pump shaft.

7. On later models with one auxiliary drive belt, disconnect the electrical connector from the electromagnetic clutch and release the wires from the mounting brackets.

8. Remove the generator and unscrew the generator mounting bracket from the water pump.

9. Remove the bolts and remove the water pump from the engine (see Fig. Location of left water pump mounting bolts, Removing the water pump from the engine). Mark the location of the bolts as they are different lengths.

Installation

Installing a new water pump gasket

Installing a new water pump gasket

1. Carefully clean the mating surfaces of the water pump and cylinder block to remove traces of the old gasket. Similarly, clean the mating surfaces of the thermostat housing and cylinder head.

2. Install the water pump with a new gasket in the reverse order of removal (see Fig. Installing a new water pump gasket). Install and adjust the tension of the auxiliary drive belts. Fill the cooling system with coolant.
