Precautions when working with the injection system (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 903)

0
When performing all repair operations on the injection system, special cleanliness must be observed. The following instructions should always be followed, but special attention should be paid to the precautions associated with the presence of an electronic engine management system:
  • connecting or disconnecting wires of injection systems or glow plugs should only be done when the engine is not running;
  • to turn the engine crankshaft (for example, to check compression), without starting the engine, you need to disconnect the fuel valve plug connector;
  • the battery terminal should only be removed when the engine is not running to avoid damaging the electronic system (on a 2.9 l engine). When disconnecting the battery, please remember that the radio may have a security code installed.

When working on the injection system, observe the following precautions:
  • all work on the injection system must be carried out in a clean room. Repairs outdoors should be carried out in calm weather to avoid dusting of parts;
  • wipe all connections thoroughly before unscrewing;
  • all removed parts should be laid out on a clean surface and covered with paper or a plastic lid. Do not use lint-free fabric for this purpose;
  • all exposed or partially disassembled injection system parts should be covered appropriately or placed in a closed container if repairs are to be postponed;
  • before installation, carefully check the cleanliness of all parts - they must be perfectly clean;
  • if the system parts are in an open position, do not use compressed air for work in the engine compartment;
  • if possible, do not move the vehicle when the injection system is disassembled;
  • make sure that no fuel gets into the cooling system hoses. If contact occurs, wipe off immediately with a cloth. Damaged hoses should be replaced. Pump repair is only possible in a special workshop. A special tool is required to remove and install the pump. Setting the injection timing is carried out only on specialized service station equipment.

Note: All work described below applies only to the engine mod. 601 (2.3 l). All work on the electronic control system on the 2.9 l engine is carried out at a service station. In the further description, these cases will be indicated additionally.
