Remove the spark plugs.
Remove the rocker arms with the pressure levers. If the rocker arms and camshafts are not renewed, they must be installed again in the same place and in the same position, otherwise on V8 engines the basic position of the hydraulic valve clearance compensators must be checked.
Pull the camshaft back or lift it together with the support stand after loosening the mounting nuts. For M110 engines (280S and 280SE) the camshafts are removed together with the camshaft housing. Or unscrew the rear cover-plug, pull the camshafts back and then unscrew the camshaft housing.
Remove the hydraulic valve clearance compensators (v8 type engines).
To remove the valves, you need a special device for compressing the springs. If you don't have one, place the head with the dividing surface on the workbench so that the desired valve is well supported at the bottom by the supporting surface. Then place a piece of tube, slightly smaller than the valve spring cover, on top of the valve cover and hammer the cover down. The halves of the cone (crackers) will jump out of the groove on the valve stem and get inside the piece of tube. You need to hold the hammer firmly on the tube so that the crackers do not fall out. Sequentially pull out all the parts of the valve stem and make sure not to lose any of them.
