Removal and installation the water pump (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

Removal



1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

2. Drain the coolant.

3. Remove the clamps and disconnect the hoses from the radiator.

4. Remove the thermostat housing with the hose going to the water pump.

5. Depending on the configuration, disconnect the carburetor heating unit hose by releasing it from the fastening to the intake manifold.

6. Remove the fan.

7. Remove the water pump drive belt.

8. Remove the pulley. If you have difficulty, screw the M10x1 puller bolt into the hub.

9. Remove the magnetic housing of the fan clutch.

10. Remove the generator with the bracket without disconnecting the wires and secure it in the engine compartment.

11. Remove the water pump by unscrewing its mounting bolts.

12. Clean and inspect all parts. Do not clean the mating surface of the water pump with any tool or abrasive material.

Installation



1. Place the gasket on the water pump housing and tighten the two screws or apply sealant such as "Loctite 518"

2. Install the water pump and tighten the mounting bolts, except for the generator bracket mounting bolts.

3. Install the generator bracket and fan clutch magnetic housing.

4. Tighten all water pump mounting bolts.

5. Install the water pump pulley.

6. Install the water pump drive belt and adjust its tension.

7. Place the fan on the hub.

8. On carburetor engines, connect the carburetor heater block hose.

9. Install the thermostat housing, after replacing the gasket.

10. Connect the hoses and tighten the clamps.

11. Fill with liquid, connect the ground wire to the battery and remove air from the cooling system.
