Filling the power steering system with fluid (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 903)

After repairing the steering mechanism, the hydraulic power steering system should be filled with the fluid required by Mercedes-Benz and then the hydraulic drive system should be bled. The fluid drained during disassembly is not suitable for reuse. There may be slight deviations depending on the temperature of the liquid. The fluid level should be checked as follows:

• unscrew the plug (figure 263) tank and take it out. To check, wipe the dipstick thoroughly and insert it into the filler hole, then remove it and determine the level. The normal fluid level should be between the Min and Max marks;
• check the tank cap gasket and replace if necessary. Screw the plug back in. The power steering fluid level should be checked every time the engine oil level is checked. However, one should not forget about routine checks. When filling, be careful to ensure that no foreign objects get into the open tank - this may cause malfunctions.
