Checking the exhaust system (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

The exhaust manifold is firmly connected to the muffler with bolts and nuts. Under the bottom, the muffler is mounted on a suspension made of durable rubber.

Sequence of works

1. Check all rubber suspension parts for breaks, cuts and other damage, replace if necessary. To check the muffler on the suspension, pull it down a little.

2. Check the strength of the bolted connection on the muffler flanges.

3. Plug the end of the exhaust pipe with a rag, the engine should stop soon. If you hear a rustling sound and the engine continues to run, the exhaust system is faulty. A loud noise and rumble when starting to move indicate a rusty muffler.

4. Carefully tap the entire exhaust system from the exhaust manifold with a hammer. If the sound is clear when you hit it with a hammer, the metal is OK; places where the sound is duller are subject to corrosion and can soon rust.
