Exhaust system — visual inspection (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

Warning! Jacking up the vehicle and placing it on jack stands is associated with the risk of injury. For this reason, familiarize yourself with the safety precautions before performing the above work.


1. Place the vehicle on jack stands.

2. Vehicles with diesel engine. Remove the engine splash guard, see the relevant chapter.

3. Check the tightness of the exhaust system mounting clamps.

4. Check the condition of the exhaust system by shining a flashlight on it. Make sure there are no holes, rusted parts, or rubbing spots.

5. Replace exhaust pipes that have significant dents.

6. Check the rubber cushions of the exhaust pipe mountings for porosity by stretching and twisting them. Replace the cushions if necessary (see illustration).

7. Cars with gasoline engines. Check the fastening of the lambda probe power supply wire and the probe itself.

8. Vehicles with diesel engine: Replace the engine splash guard.

9. Lower the vehicle.
