A) if oil is taken, then
- oil sampling device;
- oil collection container;
b) if the oil drains
- viewing pit or lift and dummy goats;
- overhead wrench HAZET 2760-2 for unscrewing the drain plug;
- socket head 27 mm or head HAZET 2169-27 for unscrewing the oil filter cap;
- a container for collecting used oil with a capacity of at least 5 liters.
Necessary materials:
- approximately 4.5 liters of engine oil. Use only oil approved by Mercedes-Benz;
- oil filter;
- an aluminum o-ring for the drain plug if the oil is to be drained rather than taken. This o-ring is sometimes included with the oil filter replacement element.
For better control over engine performance, when changing oil, fill in engine oil of the same type as the used one, and, if possible, the same brand. To avoid mixing, it is advisable when changing the oil to write down its brand, type and viscosity on a special tag, which should then be fixed to the engine.
The indiscriminate use of oils of different types adversely affects the condition of the engine. If possible, do not mix engine oils of the same type, but different brands. If necessary, you can safely mix oil of the same brand and type, but of different viscosities.
Engine oil can be drawn through the dipstick guide tube or drained through the hole in the oil pan.
In order to take the oil, you need a special pump. However, when selecting a pump, make sure that its hose diameter matches the size of the hole in the guide tube of the oil level indicator rod.
Refueling volumes when replacing engine oil and oil filter - 4.5 l
Attention! The specified filling volumes are approximate. Without fail, the oil level after refueling should be checked with a dipstick or through the display on the instrument panel.
Draining engine oil
1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. To do this, drive a short distance until the coolant temperature gauge starts to show the engine's operating temperature.
Attention!. Jacking up a car is dangerous. Please refer to the relevant instructions in chapter «car jacking».
2. Jack up the car and place it horizontally on jack stands or drive into a viewing hole.
3. Remove the cap from the oil filler neck.
4. Vehicles with a diesel engine. Remove the front of the engine mudguard, see relevant chapter.
5. Place a container under the engine to collect used oil.
Attention! Be careful when loosening the engine oil drain plug. If hot oil comes into contact with the skin, it may cause burns.
6. Unscrew the drain plug 1 from the drain hole on the oil pan 2 and completely drain the oil (see illustration).
Attention! If a large amount of metal chips and metal abrasion products are found in engine oil, then this indicates the presence of scoring, for example, in crankshaft bearings or connecting rod bearings. To avoid further damage, the oil passages and oil circulation hoses must be thoroughly cleaned after the engine has been overhauled.
Oil filter replacement
7. Unscrew cover 1 of the oil filter using a 27 mm socket and remove it together with a replaceable filter element (see illustration).
8. Replace O-ring 3 on oil filter cover 1 (see illustration).
9. Attach a new replacement filter element 4 to the cover (see illustration 8.8).
10. Insert the replaceable filter element together with the cover into the filter housing and tighten the cover with a force of 25 Nm.
Refilling engine oil
11. Screw in the drain plug, replacing the old sealing ring with a new one. The tightening torque of the plug is 30 Nm.
12. Cars with a diesel engine. Reinstall the front of the engine mudguard.
13. Lower the car.
14. Fill in new engine oil through the oil filler neck in the cylinder head cover.
Attention! It is strongly recommended that you first add 0.5 liters less oil than required. After that, warm up the engine and check the oil level using dipstick 2 (see illustration 8.18). Add oil if necessary. Excess oil must be taken away, otherwise engine gaskets or catalyst may be damaged.
15. Start the engine and let it idle until the engine oil pressure warning light goes out. After that, turn off the engine.
16. Wait two minutes and check the engine oil level with a dipstick. Add oil if necessary.
17. Perform a test drive, and upon completion, check the tightness of the oil filler cap and oil filter. Tighten them carefully if necessary.
Diesel vehicles
When draining engine oil from this engine by sampling, the following must be done:
18. Clamp with a suitable clamp, for example, HAZET-4590-2, hose 1, which connects the oil separator 2 and the guide tube 3 of the oil level rod, before proceeding with the extraction of oil (see illustration).
19. Take oil through the guide tube of the rod oil level indicator.
20. Remove the clamp from the hose.
Attention! Remember to remove the clamp before starting the engine. Otherwise, the flow of oil into the oil pan will be blocked and oil will be taken in by the engine, polluting the intake air mass flow meter.
