Towing Rules
1. Turn on the ignition on the towed vehicle. This is necessary for the steering, direction indicators and brake lights to function. It should be borne in mind that when the engine is not running, the power steering and brake drives do not work.
Accordingly, when braking and steering, you will need to apply more effort, and the braking distance in this case may be longer than usual.
2. Set the gearshift lever to neutral, on a car with an automatic transmission - to the position «N».
3. Turn on the light signaling on the towing and towed vehicles.
The use of a tow bar is recommended. When it is used, the danger of a collision between the towing and towed vehicles is eliminated.
The tow rope must be flexible enough to protect both the vehicle being towed and the vehicle being towed from damage. Use only a rope made of synthetic fibers or with elastic intermediate links.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
4. Turn on the ignition by moving the key in the lock to position 2 and move the transmission control lever to the neutral position.
Attention! If the voltage in the on-board network is less than 7 V, then the clutch does not turn on and the gears do not change. In this case, a new, fully charged battery must be installed.
Fastening a cable or towing bar by hooks
5. Cars manufactured before 2/01. The front towing hook 3 is covered with a cover 1 on the bumper. Press on the top of the cover (see arrows in illustration) and open it.
When installing cover 2, fasten at the bottom, close and fix by pressing on it.
6. Classic vehicles from 3/01. Press on the top right cover. The cover will release and can be removed.
7. Cars with a long wheelbase. Reach your hand through the opening on the right side of the bumper and remove the latch located on the left side of the opening.
The hole for mounting the towing hook at the rear is located under the rear bumper on the right side and is closed with a decorative cap.
8. Press the bottom of the plug with 4 fingers (see arrow in illustration), open it and remove it.
9. Screw in the tow hook provided with the vehicle tool kit.
Towing vehicles with automatic transmission
10. Move the transmission control lever to the position «N».
The maximum permissible towing speed is 50 km/h.
The maximum allowable towing distance is 50 km.
If the gearbox is faulty or if the vehicle is moved beyond the maximum allowable distance, the vehicle should be towed using the partial loading method (with raised drive wheels), since when the engine is not running, the pump that circulates the transmission oil does not function, and as a result, the necessary degree of lubrication of the gearbox is not provided.
Attention! When towing by partial loading, to avoid damage to the transmission, never tow the vehicle with its drive wheels turning in the opposite direction.
Towing to start the engine of the towed vehicle
Towing a car with an automatic transmission in order to start the engine is not allowed.
Attention! To avoid catalytic converter damage, do not tow or push the vehicle to start the engine when the engine is warm. Use the auxiliary battery to start the engine.
11. Turn on the hazard warning lights.
12. Turn on the ignition, turn the key in the ignition switch to position 2.
13. Cars with a manual transmission. Engage 3rd gear, press and hold the clutch pedal.
14. Cars with automatic transmission.
Set the automatic transmission control lever to position N.
15. Proceed to tow or push the vehicle.
16. Slowly release the clutch pedal when both vehicles start moving. On a vehicle with an automatic transmission, shift into gear.
As soon as the engine starts, depress the clutch pedal and shift out of gear to avoid hitting the towing vehicle.
