Jacking
The car jack is located in an additional compartment under the boot floor, next to the spare wheel.
To transfer the jack to the working position, remove it from the luggage compartment, press it up and turn it to the right until the drive knob stops.
Before laying the jack in the luggage compartment, bring it into the transport state: turn the stop pin to the jack support, press the knob up and turn it to the left until it stops.
Attention! The standard jack is intended only for short-term lifting of the car when changing the wheel! Before performing any work under the car, it is necessary to install it on special props.
The heel of the jack should rest on a flat and hard surface. For loose soil, use a special lining (in winter it is useful to have a piece of a wide board in the car).
Park the car on a flat, level surface, if possible with a hard surface.
Firmly apply the parking brake.
With the appropriate configuration, move the AT selector lever to the position «R».
Chock the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel to be replaced.
Attention! When performing the procedure on a slope, place shoes under both wheels of the second axle on the downhill side.
Remove the necessary tool from the trunk (jack, wheel wrench) and spare wheel (see chapter Manual). Assemble the two-piece wheel wrench.
If equipped, remove the disc guard, then loosen the wheel bolts.
Using a screwdriver, remove the jack hole plug. Holes for jacking are located in the body sills behind the front wheel arches and in front of the rear wheel arches.
Rotate the drive knob until the wheel to be replaced is completely off the ground.
Insert the jack support pin up to the stop (fully) into the threshold opening. Bring the jack to a strictly vertical position (even if the car is parked on a slope).
Remove the upper wheel bolt and replace it with the centering pin from the on-board tool kit. Turn out the remained bolts and make replacement of the failed wheel.
Only branded bolts with the Mercedes-Benz logo must be used to fasten the wheels
1 - Bolts used to fasten wheels 8 S Jx18 with AMG rims for 5 holes
2 - Bolts used to fasten wheels 7 S Jx16 with stamped discs for 5 or 6 holes
3 - Bolts used to fasten wheels 7 S Jx16 with alloy wheels
Put the failed wheel and tool in their regular places in the luggage compartment of the car.
Towing
Transportation of an emergency vehicle on a tow truck platform.
For loading an emergency vehicle onto a tow truck, towing eyes can be used - if equipped, do not forget to move the AT selector lever to the position «N».
The car is mounted only on wheels / disks.
Attention! In order to avoid damage, never mount the vehicle on the suspension elements!
Emergency vehicle towing
Strictly speaking, an emergency vehicle should be towed with the drive wheels off the ground (rear) wheels (even better - on a tow truck platform).
Models with AT
Cars equipped with AT can be towed forward on all four wheels at a speed not exceeding 50 km/h and for a distance of not more than 50 km.
Attention! Failure to comply with the maximum speed or towing distance may result in damage to the transmission.
Check the transmission fluid level before towing (see Section Checking the ATF level, replacing the AT filter Chapters Current service), - if the ATF level is insufficient, the necessary adjustment should be made, or the car should be towed only with the driving wheels off the ground.
Attention! Towing a car equipped with AT for long distances, as well as with a failed transmission, should be carried out only with the drive wheels off the ground, or with the cardan shaft disconnected! Ideally - on a tow truck platform. Carry out the following preparatory procedures:
- a) Release the parking brake;
- b) Start the engine;
- c) Move the selector lever to position «D», then to neutral («N»);
- d) Stop the engine;
- e) Turn the ignition key to position 2 (never leave it in position 0);
- f) Function «Automatic door locking while driving» can be turned off.
All models
When towing an emergency vehicle, use only a tow rope specially designed for this purpose. The use of modern synthetic materials made it possible to establish the production of towing cables of an elastic design, minimizing the risk of breaks as a result of the sling falling under the wheels of a towed vehicle.
Attention! The most convenient and safe means of towing a vehicle on wheels is a rigid tow bar.
towing element (rope/rod) must only be hooked to the special towing eye, and never to the bumper or suspension elements.
The rear towing eye is located on the right under the bumper, the front towing eye is on the right under the decorative cover. Insert your hand into the groove of the cover and remove the latter, leaving it hanging on the safety tapes.
Attention! When installing the decorative cover, make sure that the upper latch is securely snapped into place.
The driver of the towing vehicle should try to move as evenly as possible, releasing the clutch smoothly when changing gears and especially when pulling away.
When driving a towed vehicle, make sure that during the movement the cable remains constantly taut - when manipulating the foot brake, try to avoid sudden jerks and collisions with a loose cable.
Do not forget to turn the key in the ignition of the towed vehicle to the ON position, otherwise the steering column will inevitably lock. In addition, when the ignition is switched on, the direction indicators and brake lights are also activated.
Warning! Activation of direction indicators when the alarm is on leads to a temporary shutdown of the latter.
Remember that when the engine is off, the vehicle's braking performance is noticeably reduced due to the fact that the vacuum brake booster ceases to function. In this case, you should depress the foot brake pedal with a noticeably greater force than usual. On models equipped with power steering, more force will have to be applied to the steering wheel when maneuvering.
Before driving, the drivers of both vehicles (towing and towed) the itinerary must be agreed upon.
Movement should be carried out only at moderate speeds, along the shortest route and in compliance with traffic rules. Avoid sudden braking, acceleration and maneuvering. Be aware that when towing your vehicle on the edge of a dirt road, there is always a risk of drifting to the side of the road.
Attention! After disconnecting the battery terminals or when the battery is discharged, the electronic key in the ignition lock no longer turns, and the AT selector lever remains locked in position «R». (Charging the battery is discussed in Chapter Current service or Starting the Engine with the Auxiliary Battery - Refer to Resources Introduction to the Guide).
Attention! Turning the electronic key in the ignition switch is only possible when the battery is connected and charged. If the electronic key in the ignition lock cannot be turned, the AT selector lever remains locked in position «R».
Attention! When towing with the front axle raised or checking the parking brake on the brake test stand, the engine must be off. Otherwise, due to the active braking action of the electronic anti-skid (ESP) the brake system of the rear axle will be damaged.
Towing to start the engine
Before attempting to start the engine by towing the vehicle, try to use an auxiliary power source if possible.
Attention! Try to avoid locking the keys in the passenger compartment when pushing the car - the door lock actuators are activated when the left front wheel is rotated when the key is in position 2.
Models with manual transmission
Towing in order to start the engine must be carried out with the battery connected and the ignition key turned in position 2 in the lock.
Starting the engine by pushing or towing should only be done with a cold engine and catalytic converter. Avoid repeated lengthy startup attempts.
Models with AT
It is not possible to start the engine equipped with AT by towing or pushing - if necessary, use an auxiliary power source.
