1. Check all rubber parts of the muffler suspension (fig. 4.100) for breaks, cuts and other damage, replace if necessary. To check the muffler on the suspension, pull it down slightly.
2. Check the strength of the bolted connection on the muffler flanges.
3. Plug the exhaust end of the muffler with a rag. The engine should soon stall. If you hear a rustling sound and the engine continues to run, the exhaust system is not in order.
4. A very loud noise and rumble when starting to move indicate a rusty muffler.

5. Check the elastic connection in front of the muffler for wear (fig. 4.101).
6. Carefully tap the entire exhaust system from the manifold with a hammer. If the sound is clear when you hit it with a hammer, the metal is fine. If the sound is duller in some places, these places are subject to corrosion and may soon rust.
