Contents: Removal ↡ Installation ↡
On all models, the starter is bolted to the clutch housing on the left rear of the engine. The starter can be accessed from underneath the vehicle. On diesel models with an engine oil heat exchanger, the starter removal process is significantly more difficult and requires raising the engine.

Removal

All petrol models and diesel models without engine oil heat exchanger

Removal the starter from its socket in the clutch housing

Removal the starter from its socket in the clutch housing

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery. Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands.

2. Remove the engine splash shield from the front of the engine compartment.

3. Remove the air filter. Unscrew and remove the intake manifold support bracket.

4. At the bottom of the oil pan, unscrew the guide hose mounting bracket and move the hose to the side.

5. From the back of the traction relay, unscrew the nuts and screws and disconnect the electrical wires from the traction relay.

6. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and check that the left-hand idler arm is as far away from the starter as possible. On turbocharged diesel models, disconnect the center tie rod from the left-hand idler arm.

7. Unscrew the nuts and remove the upper and lower starter mounting bolts.

8. Remove the starter from the clutch housing and remove it from the engine compartment (see picture).

Diesel engine models with oil heat exchanger

2. Remove the splash guard from the bottom of the engine compartment.

3. Remove the air filter. Unscrew and remove the intake manifold support bracket.

4. Attach the slings of the lifting mechanism to the engine lifting eyes. Raise the lifting mechanism so that the weight of the engine is supported by the lifting mechanism. Unscrew the lower engine mount mounting bolts on both sides of the engine.

5. Raise the engine to provide space to remove the starter.

6. Unscrew the nuts and remove the bolts of the upper and lower starter mounts.

7. Remove the starter from the clutch housing socket and take it out of the engine compartment.
