Contents: Removal ↡ Installation ↡
On all models, the alternator is mounted on the right front side of the engine and is driven by an auxiliary drive belt.

On 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder SOHC gasoline models, the alternator can be removed from the engine from the top of the engine compartment. On 6-cylinder DOHC gasoline and all diesel models, the alternator can only be removed from underneath the vehicle.

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery. If necessary, raise the front of the car and secure it on stands.

2. Remove the engine splash guard located at the bottom of the engine compartment. Remove the engine air supply pipes for better access.

3. Remove the accessory drive belt from the alternator pulley.

4. Remove the bolts and plastic cover from the rear of the alternator. Press the tabs and disconnect the multi-pin electrical connector from the alternator (see Fig. Location of the Generator Multi-Pin Connector Lock).

5. On models with a smaller alternator, remove the rubber protective boot, unscrew the nuts and disconnect the alternator wires from the terminals (see Fig. Electrical wire connections to the reduced size generator).

6. Unscrew the upper and then lower generator mounting bolts and remove the generator from the bracket (see Fig. Location of generator mounting bolts).

7. If necessary, remove the voltage regulator and brush holder assembly.

Installation

1. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Install the auxiliary drive belt and adjust its tension.
