Design and technical characteristics of the cardan shaft and axle (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

Contents: Rear axle ↡ Rear wheel drive ↡ Tightening torques of main threaded…↡
The cardan transmission consists of two tubular shafts with an intermediate support fixed to the body base, mounted on a ball bearing. At the front and rear ends of each shaft there are elastic couplings with centering bushings. The shafts are connected to each other by a cross-piece of the hinge.

Rear axle

The rear axle is sprung, with a hypoid final drive. The main gear pinion rotates in tapered roller bearings. The rear axle is attached to the rear of the body base. The rear wheels are driven by articulated shafts. The rear axle pinion is mounted on two tapered roller bearings. The differential is made on two planetary gears mounted on one shaft.

Rear wheel drive

The drive of each wheel consists of two ball joints of equal angular velocities, since the angular movements of the cardan joints are insignificant, their wear is minimal.
