Adjusting the valve timing

Adjusting the valve timing
A - mark on the camshaft
B - mark on the crankshaft pulley
1 - fixed mark
2 - movable mark

Removal

This operation is performed on the engine removed from the vehicle each time the camshaft drive chain is removed (for removing the cylinder head and camshaft), except for chain replacement.

1. Loosen the distributor cap mounting screws.

2. Disconnect the high-tension wires from the spark plugs.

3. Remove the cylinder head cover with high-tension wires and the distributor cap.

Note: If the cylinder head cover is difficult to remove, do not hit it with a hammer to avoid cracking. Pry the cover off carefully.

4. Remove the distributor rotor, drive plate and interference suppressor cover.

5. Loosen the bolts securing the upper camshaft drive cover. Remove the cover gasket.

6. Remove the top cover by hitting the camshaft axis with a wooden hammer.

7. Turn the crankshaft until the piston of the 1st cylinder reaches TDC.

8. Unscrew the screw plug of the chain tensioner. Remove the sealing ring and spring.

Caution: Loosen the screw cap carefully to avoid spring ejection.

9. Remove the bottom ring.

10. Remove the tensioner.

11. To make it easier to turn the crankshaft, remove the spark plugs.

12. Make sure that the crankshaft is still in the position corresponding to the TDC of the piston of the 1st cylinder (the fixed protrusion should be opposite the moving mark - see the illustration Adjusting the valve timing).

13. Check if the movable mark on the camshaft matches (holes in the flange) and a fixed mark on the cylinder head.

14. Remove the engine crankcase.

15. Lock the flywheel from turning.

16. Remove the crankshaft pulley with the damper by unscrewing the central bolt.

17. Remove the disc washers.

18. Remove the timing cover.

19. Mark the relative positions of the chain and sprockets of the crankshaft and camshaft with paint.

20. Apply marks to the camshaft sprocket and to the shaft itself.

21. Remove the chain guide using an inertia puller.

22. Remove the camshaft sprocket by unscrewing the mounting bolts.

23. Loosen the tension of the oil pump drive chain and remove it.

24. Remove the camshaft drive chain.

Installation

1. Make sure that the crankshaft and camshaft are in the valve timing adjustment position.

2. Place the chain on the camshaft sprocket, ensuring that the marks match.

3. Install the sprocket onto the camshaft, making sure the marks match.

4. Install the chain guide.

5. Install the oil pump drive chain.

6. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

7. Fill with oil and coolant.

8. Remove air from the cooling system.
