Installing connecting rods and bearings (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

0
1. Clean the bearing beds and caps of the big end of the connecting rod, the channels and seats in the connecting rods.

2. Install the bearing shells into the connecting rods and their caps, inserting the tongues into the cutouts, having previously generously lubricated them with oil.

3. Lubricate the cylinder mirrors with engine oil.

4. Place the ring compressor on the piston of cylinder 1, then insert the piston and connecting rod into cylinder 1. Bring the 1st connecting rod journal to its lowest position, carefully insert the piston into the cylinder using the handle of a hammer, while guiding the connecting rod onto its journal. Make sure that the arrow on the piston bottom faces the front of the engine.

5. Lubricate the crankshaft journal with oil, then install the corresponding connecting rod bearing cap and tighten the nuts. Check that the crankshaft rotates freely.

6. Set the piston to TDC and, using a vernier caliper, measure the distance between the piston bottom and the top surface of the cylinder head. It must meet the technical requirements.

7. Repeat the above operations on the remaining pistons.

8. Install the lower half of the crankshaft rear oil seal into the groove on the oil pan housing. After installation, the ends of the oil seal should protrude by 0.5 mm. Press the oil seal with an oiled hammer handle and cut it off.

9. Clean the mating surfaces of the sump housing and crankcase, and lubricate them with sealing paste.

10. Install the oil pan cover onto the crankcase, insert and tighten the bolts.

11. Install the generator bracket and tighten the bolts.

12. Lubricate the oil return tube and the dipstick tube with sealing paste and install them in the oil pan housing.

13. Install the oil pump, front crankshaft oil seal and cylinder head.
