Replacing the rear brake cable (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126)

Raise and support the car.

Remove the handbrake shoes and cams.

Remove the handbrake shoes and cams.


Remove the screw (25) from the diagonal lever (4) and disconnect the brake cable.

On models with a heat shield under the intermediate lever (6), support the rear of the exhaust system with a jack.

Remove the heat shield.

Using pliers, detach the release spring (12) from the wire.

Turn the adjusting screw (3) of the adjusting bracket (1) completely back. Unhook the intermediate lever (6) from the frame on the chassis floor (2) and pull it out of the adjusting bracket.

Disconnect the handbrake control cable (10) from the balance lever (7).



Remove the spring clip (13) and remove the handbrake control cable (10) from the bracket (14).

Installation



Caution: Care must be taken not to damage the rubber bushing through which the control cable passes, as this may allow dirt to enter the latter.


Install the control cable in the same manner as described in the previous section, making sure that the rubber grommet is securely held in the diagonal arm bracket.

Secure the cable to the bracket using a spring clamp.

Hook the cable to the balance lever.

Hook the release spring to the wire.

Secure the bracket with the cable to the diagonal arm with a screw.

Install the brake shoes in place.

Adjust the parking brake.

Install the heat shield in place (if provided) and re-attach the rear part of the exhaust system.

Lower the car.
