Removal



20. Release the parking brake.

21. Place the vehicle on jack stands.

Warning! Jacking up the vehicle and placing it on stands may pose a risk of injury. Read the provisions of Chapter "Jacking up a car".


22. Remove the brake shoes of the drum brake mechanism, see the relevant chapter.

23. Cars with rear disc brakes. Remove the brake shoe expanders on the left and right wheels.

24. Disconnect the brake shoe drive cables on the right and left wheels, the right and left parking brake drive cable from the brake shoe release plate of the rear wheels.

25. Remove the underbody protection of the car, see the relevant chapter.

26. Disconnect the brake shoe drive cables of the right and left rear wheels from the front cable, see the relevant chapter.


27. Release the cables 1 of the rear brake shoe drive from the couplings 2 on the underbody using the MERCEDES-BENZ 079 tool (see illustration).

28. Release the rear wheel brake shoe drive cables from the mountings on the trailing arms on the right and left sides of the rear axle.

29. Cars with rear drum brakes. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the left and right hand parking brake cables from the brake shoe support shields and remove them from the holes.



30. Cars with rear disc brakes. Unscrew the bolts and disconnect the parking brake cables of the left and right rear wheels from the brake shoe support shields and remove them through the holes in the protective covers (housings).

Installation



31. Vehicles with rear drum brakes: Insert and secure the left and right parking brake cables into the holes on the brake shoe support shields.

32. Cars with rear disc brakes. Route the brake shoe drive cables through the holes in the brake housings and secure them with bolts to the support shields.

33. Secure the rear wheel parking brake cables to their holders on the suspension trailing arms.

34. Secure the rear parking brake cables to their holders on the underbody of the vehicle.

35. Connect the rear brake shoe drive cables to the front cable, see the relevant chapter.

36. Connect the parking brake cable ends to the rear brake shoe drive levers.

37. Cars with rear disc brakes. Install the expander plates on the rear wheel brake pads.

38. Install the brake shoes of the drum brake mechanism, see the relevant chapter.

39. Adjust the parking brake, see the relevant chapter.

Caution! For vehicles with rear drum brakes, adjust the brake shoe adjuster so that the brake shoes are fully seated on the brake drum. To do this, start the engine to ensure sufficient braking force and depress the brake pedal several times.


40. Install the underbody protection of the car, see the relevant chapter.

41. Lower the car onto its wheels.

42. Check the operation of the parking brake.
