Removal and installation the drive chain (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

0
To replace the drive chain, you need a hand-held stripping machine that allows you to replace the chain without removing the engine from the car. The new drive chain must have a locking link. When overhauling the engine, an endless drive chain is usually installed.

Remove the air filter.

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Remove the spark plugs.

While turning the crankshaft, remove the rocker arms of the right camshaft.

Remove the chain tensioner or chain tensioner spring (section 3.10.1).

Turn the crankshaft to the TDC of the piston of the first cylinder, the marks on the camshafts and the camshaft housing must match.

Cover the gap under the chain with a clean cloth.

Use a stripping machine to cut off the axle heads of one chain link without disconnecting the chain.

Attach the lock link of the new chain to the old chain, while simultaneously removing the link with the cut off axle heads, as shown in Fig. 87.

Place a 27mm socket wrench with a ratchet on the head of the central crankshaft pulley mounting bolt.

Slowly rotate the crankshaft in the direction of travel until the locking link appears on the camshaft sprocket.

Disconnect the old chain, connect the new chain with a locking link, placing it on the inside, as shown in Fig. 88, install the second plate and the lock. The cut on the lock should be directed in the direction opposite to the direction of movement (see fig. 89).

Turn the crankshaft until the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC and check the position of the marks on the camshafts and camshaft housing, as shown in Fig. 90.

Install the chain tensioner (section 3.10.1).

Perform the remaining work in reverse order.
