Master brake cylinder (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

All models of cars are equipped with a main brake cylinder with two working cavities, which are connected to a double reservoir, providing the flow of brake fluid into two separate brake circuits. The pipelines are divided into front and rear so that the piston located closer to the pusher acts on the brakes of the front wheels and the intermediate piston acts on the brake circuit of the rear wheels.

Removal and installation the master brake cylinder



The master brake cylinder is secured to the end surface of the brake booster and is removed from the engine compartment.

Place the hose on the air bleed nipple, lower the other end of the hose into a suitable container, open the nipple and press the brake pedal several times until the brake fluid stops draining from the hose.

Disconnect the brake fluid level indicator switch plug located next to the reservoir cap.

Pull the tank out of the mounting bushings by rocking it in both directions.

Disconnect the pipes and carefully bend them to the side. Seal the ends of the pipes with adhesive tape.

Loosen the cylinder mount. Be careful not to drop the rubber sealing ring on the end of the brake booster.

The installation of the master brake cylinder is performed in the reverse order. Install a new rubber sealing ring. Tighten the master brake cylinder mounting bolts and tighten to 15 Nm. A non-adjustable pusher is installed in the brake booster. Secure the reservoir, fill with brake fluid and bleed air from the hydraulic system, as described below.



Repair of the main brake cylinder



The main brake cylinder cannot be repaired. If the cylinder is faulty, it must be replaced.
