Checking the steering play (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

Steering play can be adjusted if it is not a result of a malfunction. Play adjustment should be performed at a service station that has the appropriate measuring device for this operation.

Sequence of works

1. Set the wheels straight.

2. Through the open side window, turn the steering wheel in both directions.

3. The front wheels should move synchronously. It is better to look at the disk, since the tires can smooth out part of the turning force due to elasticity.

4. If there is no play in the straight position, but there is jamming during a strong turn, the toothed rack is worn. In this case, it is necessary to replace the steering mechanism.
