V-ribbed belt — removal and installation (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W202)

0
Contents: Removal ↡ Installation ↡

V-belt (standard design)

1. Tension roller

1. Tension roller
2. Crankshaft belt pulley
5. Three-phase current generator belt pulley
7. Power steering pump belt pulley
8. Coolant pump belt pulley

The V-belt drives all additional engine units. The ribbed V-belt is wider than a regular V-belt and has many ribs on the inside. The ribbed V-belt is tensioned by an automatic tensioner consisting of a tension spring, tension roller and shock absorber. The shock absorber ensures uniform belt tension across the entire engine speed range. Depending on the vehicle's equipment, the V-belt has different lengths.

Removal

Removal

1. Remove the fan hydraulic clutch.

Please note: The union nut has a left-hand thread.

Please note: The union nut has a left-hand thread.

2. Release the tensioner, unscrew the flange nut (378).

3. Insert a rod into the hole of the spring tension lever (374) and press it against the force of the tension spring (380) to the left (in the direction of the oil dipstick), until the bolt (375) is relieved enough to be pushed out in the direction of the intake manifold. The rod can be a wrench from the vehicle's on-board tool or a lever about 300 mm long and 12-13 mm in diameter.

4. Slowly release the spring tension lever, press the tension roller and remove the V-belt.

Installation

1. Check the belt pulley profiles for damage and dirt, clean or replace the pulleys if necessary. Pay attention to the dents in the belt pulleys and loose tensioner attachment points.

2. If there are pits on the pulley, replace it. Also replace the tensioner if the mounting supports are loose.

3. Ribbed V-belts that have contamination between the rib protrusions, belts with transverse cracks and broken ribs must be replaced.

4. Lift the tensioner roller slightly, rotate the belt from the back side to form a small loop, and push it between the coolant pump and crankshaft belt pulleys.

5. Press the ribbed V-belt firmly against the coolant pump belt pulley and at the same time turn the belt pulley to the left (arrow) until the belt is on the tension roller.

6. Place the V-ribbed belt on the tension roller and crankshaft belt pulley. Then, rotating the free part of the belt, place it on the belt pulleys of the cooling compressor, power steering pump, coolant pump and three-phase alternator.

7. Using the rod (1), turn the spring tension lever (2) to the left until the bolt (3) allows it. This is how the belt is tensioned. (4 – tension spring).

8. Tighten the flange nut (1).

9. Check the tightness of the V-ribbed belt fit on the belt pulleys.

10. Install the fan hydraulic clutch.
