Camshaft installation details
70 - Cylinder head; 80, 81, 82 - Camshaft bearing caps; 84, 132, 190 - Bolts; 84a, 189, 237 - Washers; 125 - Cylinder head cover; 188 - Camshaft sprocket; 224 - Timing chain tensioner; 400 - Oil pump (on models with self-adjusting suspension)
The camshaft code is stamped on the flange near the VM mark
Removing
1. On engines with a turbocharger, remove the compressed air supply pipe
2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
3. Set the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position.
Attention! Do not rotate the engine crankshaft by the camshaft sprocket bolt and in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation.
4. Remove the timing chain tensioner.
5. On self-adjusting suspension models, remove the oil pump.
6. Align the marks on the camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
7. Turn away a bolt of fastening of an asterisk of a camshaft, holding a camshaft by means of a metal core.
8. Remove the camshaft sprocket and let the chain hang down.
9. Turn away bolts of fastening of covers (1), (5) And (6) camshaft bearings. Loosen the cover bolts (2), (3), (4) And (7) alternately, one turn each.
10. Remove the camshaft.
11. Remove the retainer (axial clearance adjuster) and check its condition.
12. Remove hydraulic lifters. Check their status (visually) and, if necessary, replace them.
Installation
1. Insert the retainer (axial clearance adjuster) into the cylinder head. 2. Lubricate the camshaft with engine oil and install it in the cylinder head so that the TDC mark is at the top.
3. Establish covers of bearings of a camshaft and tighten bolts of their fastening. Tighten the caps first (2), (3), (4) And (7) alternately, one turn each. Then tighten the cap screws (1), (3) And (6) camshaft bearings.
4. Install the camshaft sprocket by aligning the mark on it with the mark on the timing chain.
5. Install the timing chain tensioner.
6. Install the oil pump.
7. Set the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position and check the alignment of the marks.
8. Install the cylinder head cover. Start the engine and check for leaks.
