Removal and installation of automatic transmission (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

0
The automatic transmission can be removed separately, without removing the engine. The transmission has a significant mass and therefore reliable supports must be placed under the transmission when carrying out work. The automatic transmission is removed together with the torque converter.

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Drain the oil from the gearbox, unscrew the oil filler pipe from the gearbox housing and the plug from the torque converter housing. Drain the oil into a suitable container.

Disconnect the lines from the oil cooler.

Loosen the mounting bolt and remove the pressure control lever from the shaft.

Disconnect the wires from the speed limit valve (Kick-Down).

Disconnect the pipeline from the vacuum chamber.

Disconnect the tachometer shaft from the gearbox.

Disconnect the plug from the starter interlock switch and the reverse light switch.

Remove the gearbox control rods.

Raise the gearbox and remove the rear support of the powertrain suspension.

Loosen the fastening of the exhaust pipes.

Disconnect the propeller shaft.

After removing the cover from the torque converter clutch housing, disconnect the torque converter from the drive discs by turning the engine crankshaft.

Loosen the starter mounting bolts.

Loosen the gearbox mounting bolts.

Move the gearbox back from the torque converter until the torque converter journal is released.

Carefully lower the box down and pull it forward.

Installation

Installation of the automatic transmission is performed in the reverse order. To install the torque converter, place the gearbox vertically and carefully connect it to the drive shaft. When installing, pay attention to the torque converter seal and the alignment of the torque converter with the drive disks on the engine.
