The 280/280 SE and 350 SE models can be equipped with automatic transmissions at the customer's request. The 450 SE model has an automatic transmission as standard.
Disassembly, assembly and adjustment of automatic transmissions can only be performed in specialized workshops with the appropriate tools and equipment. Therefore, only the removal and installation of the transmission is described.
All forward gears are switched from first gear after the start of movement. After stopping, the second gear remains engaged in the gearbox, which reduces the likelihood of the car moving spontaneously. To engage first gear before starting movement, you must briefly press the gas pedal.
Since not all workshops can repair an automatic transmission, in most cases a replacement transmission is used. The transmission requiring repair is removed from the vehicle and a replacement automatic transmission is installed.
