Removal and installation the steering column switch (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203)

The steering column switch switches the following devices: low beam, high beam, direction indicators and windshield wipers.

Removal



1. Set the wheels straight.

2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable with the ignition off. The cabin air filter box must be removed first.

Warning! Before disconnecting the cable, find out the radio receiver security code, if any, refer to Section Replacing the battery.


Be sure to follow safety precautions when handling the airbag, refer to Section Safety precautions when working with an airbag.

3. Remove the steering wheel, refer to Section Removal and installation the steering wheel.

Attention! The operation of lifting and installing the car on stands is associated with danger! Therefore, before carrying out the operation, read the Section Jacking and towing Introduction to the manual.

4. Loosen the screws (1) securing the contact spiral with the front wheels straight so that the spiral can be removed.

Attention! Do not unscrew the screws completely. Otherwise, the contact spiral will be disassembled and will have to be reassembled in the middle position (work of the service station).




5. Carefully remove the contact coil from the steering column switch. The steering column switch connector will automatically disconnect.

1. Remove the cover under the instrument panel, refer to the relevant section.

2. Disconnect the cruise control switch plug (2) from the ignition switch.

Installation



Warning! Be sure to observe safety precautions when handling the airbag, refer to Section Safety precautions when working with an airbag.




1. Make sure the car wheels are straight.

2. Connect the steering column switch connector and install the switch in place.

3. Insert 2 connectors into the switch and fix.

4. If there is a cruise control, connect the ignition switch connector and install the cover under the instrument panel, refer to the relevant section.

5. Secure the steering column switch with three screws.

6. Install the contact spiral until it stops on the steering spindle. Fix the connector.

7. Fasten the 2 connectors. Make sure that both markings match (arrows in the illustration).

8. Replace the steering wheel. When doing so, observe the safety precautions when handling the airbag, refer to Section Safety precautions when working with an airbag.

9. Connect the battery ground (-) cable with the ignition off. Reinstall the cabin air filter box. If necessary, enter the radio code and set the clock.
