Headlight and windshield wiper switches (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W220)

High beam (combined steering column switch press away from you).



Parking lights, right.

Parking lights, left.

Pull the switch to the 1st locking position:

Fog light in addition to parking and low beam.

The green control LED is on.

Pull the switch to the 2nd locking position:

Rear fog light in addition to fog lights.

The yellow control LED is on.



Note: When the electronic key is removed and the door is open, a signal sounds if the vehicle's exterior lighting is on (except for parking lights) not turned off.


Switching headlights



The headlights can be switched on/off manually or automatically, or switched to constant mode.

Select the appropriate function - refer to the subsection "Individual installation" of the Section Multifunctional steering wheel, multi-information display.

Manual mode: Low beam, parking lights and license plate light are switched on and off via the light switch.

(Light switch - see above).

Automatic mode: Turn the electronic key in the ignition switch to position 0.

The side lights turn on and off automatically depending on the external light level.

Turn the electronic key in the ignition switch to position 1.

The low beam, parking lights and number plate lighting are switched on and off automatically depending on the external light level.

The low beam, parking lights and number plate light can still be switched on and off manually via the light switch.

Attention! In foggy conditions, the headlights do not turn on via the automatic headlight switching function.


There is a risk of accident!

The driver is always responsible for the lighting of the vehicle. The automatic headlight switching function is only an auxiliary device to make driving easier for the driver.

If necessary, turn on the vehicle lighting manually.

Constant light mode¹: Light switch in position 0.

Low beam, parking lights and number plate light are on when the engine is running. High beam cannot be turned on, only the warning light can be turned on.



When the light switch is turned from position 0, the light turns on according to the switch position. (Light switch - see above).

Delayed headlight switch-off function



After turning off the lights, opening and closing one door and turning the electronic key in the ignition switch to position 0 or removing it, the low beam lights up.

The duration of the switch-off delay when switching off the headlights with a time delay can be adjusted in several steps between the values 0 (off) and 60 seconds.

To select this function, please refer to the "Individual Installation" subsection of the Section Multifunctional steering wheel, multi-information display.

Temporarily deactivating the timed headlight function: Before leaving the vehicle, turn the electronic key in the ignition switch to position 0, then to position 2, and then back to position 0. In this case, the timed headlight function after opening the door is not activated.

Direction indication: Lock the combination switch. Return to the original position is carried out automatically when the steering wheel is turned.

  • 6 - Lightly press the switch: one movement of the wiper blades without water supply (turn on only when the windshield is wet)

Press the switch past the resistance point: windshield washer, windshield wiper (Adding water to the windshield washer reservoir is discussed in Chapter Routine maintenance).
  • 7 — Windscreen wiper
  • 0 Off.
  • I — Interval mode

When switched on, the wiper blades perform one stroke. After that, the intervals are automatically adjusted depending on the amount of moisture on the glass.
  • II - Normal mode
  • III - Accelerated mode

Blocked windshield wiper



When the windshield wiper is blocked (for example, snow) eliminate the causes. For safety, remove the electronic key from the ignition switch.

Then turn the windshield wiper back on (turn the electronic key in the ignition switch to position 1).

Streaks on the windshield



When the windshield wiper is on, turn on the windshield washer, including during rain. (Adding water to the windshield washer reservoir is discussed in Chapter Routine maintenance).
