The injection system of the 4.2l 8-cylinder V-engine has been adapted to the HFM control system. The injection and ignition control functions are now combined in the Motronic 1.0 engine control unit. The electronic control system of the new automatic transmission, which has been equipped with the E 420 since the start of production, is integrated with the engine management system.
The E 430 replaced the E 420. The new 4.3-liter unit belongs to the M 113 engine series. It was developed in conjunction with the M 112 series V-shaped 6-cylinder engines. The E 420 and E 430 engines share the same innovative solutions: 3 valves per cylinder, two spark plugs per cylinder, low friction cylinder liners. The units are manufactured at the engine plant in Bad Cannstatt.
In January 1996, the E-Class model range was expanded with a sporty version of the E 50 AMG. This is an 8-cylinder V-shaped engine with a displacement of 5 liters and a power of 347 hp, built by AMG on the basis of a 4.2-liter engine. Subsequently, the E 50 AMG model was replaced by the E 55 AMG engine with a displacement of 5.5 liters and a power of 354 hp, belonging to the M 113 series.
