Checking, replacing and adjusting the water pump and generator drive belt (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

Every 24,000 km, check the drive belt and adjust its tension. Inspect the belt along its entire length to detect possible cracks and wear, and crank the engine to check the belt surfaces that contact the pulleys. Replace a faulty belt.

1. On vehicles with power steering, air conditioning system (compressor) their drive belts must first be removed.

2. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

3. Loosen the generator mounting bolts and nuts and slide it toward the cylinder block.

4. Remove the drive belt from the alternator, water pump pulleys and crankshaft and remove the belt through the fan blades.

5. Place the new belt on the pulleys and tighten it by turning the ratchet bolt head that contacts the rack.

6. Tighten the generator mounting bolts and nuts and connect the negative battery terminal.

7. Let the engine run for a few minutes with all electrical components connected, stop the engine and re-adjust the belt tension.
