1. On all models, the generator is bolted to the right side of the cylinder block and is driven by the accessory drive belt.
2. On most models, the alternator can be removed from the engine compartment upwards without raising the vehicle. On certain high-end models, due to the size of the engine and the large number of attachments, the alternator must be removed from underneath the vehicle.
Removal
3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support it on stands (see "Lifting the car and placing it on supports").
4. Where provided, remove the engine guard as described in Chapter 11. If necessary, also remove the air duct to improve access - for information, see Chapter 4.
5. Remove the accessory drive belt as described in Chapter 1.

6. On models with a conventional alternator, remove the four bolts and the rear alternator cover. Release the spring clip and disconnect the plug from the multi-pin connector (see fig. 5.6).

7. On models equipped with a "compact" generator, remove the rubber boot, unscrew the nuts and disconnect the generator wires from the terminals (see fig. 5.7).

8. Loosen and unscrew first the lower, then the upper mounting bolts and remove the generator from the support bracket (see fig. 5.8).

9. If removal of the brush holder/voltage regulator is required, refer to paragraph 6.
Installation
10. Installation is carried out in reverse order. Refer to Chapter 1 for information on how to install and tension the accessory drive belt.
