2. Position the generator on a clean surface, pulley down.
3. On models equipped with a compact generator, unscrew the mounting screws, then pry up the clips and remove the plastic cover on the back of the generator.
4. Loosen and remove the screws holding the brush holder / voltage regulator, then remove the assembly from the generator (see fig. 6.4, a-g).

5. Measure the free length of the brushes - take the measurement from the manufacturer's emblem which is etched on the side of the brush to the smallest part of the rounded end of the brush. Check the technical data - replace the brushes if they are worn below the acceptable limit.
6. Check the surface of the slip rings on the end of the generator shaft. If they are found to be worn, scorched or corroded, replacement should be considered - consult an automotive electrical system specialist for advice.
7. Assemble the generator in reverse order. When finished, contact paragraph 5 and install the generator.
