Crankshaft pulley / vibration damper
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Where required, remove the engine shield from below as described in Chapter 11.
3. Remove the radiator and radiator fan blades as described in Chapter 3.
4. Loosen the radiator fan pulley bolts, then remove the accessory drive belt as described in Chapter 1A.
5. Loosen the bolts and remove the fan pulley.
6. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the pulley/vibration damper from the hub. If necessary, hold the pulley from turning with a wrench on the hub mounting bolt.
Installation
7. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Install the accessory drive belt as described in Chapter 1A and install the radiator fan blades and shroud and radiator as described in Chapter 3.
Hub
Removal
Warning: The hub mounting bolt is very tight. When loosening the bolt, a hub locking device is required. Do not use random or unintended tools for this purpose, as this may cause injury or damage.
Note: A hub puller may be required to remove the hub. A torque wrench capable of producing up to 300 Nm of torque may be required for installation. Also note that the hub must be heated to approximately 50 C to install. A hub puller may be required to remove the hub.
8. Remove the crankshaft pulley as described earlier in this paragraph.
9. Assemble the hub holding device. You can make a device from two metal rods connected with an axle bot. Secure the hub holding device from turning with the pulley/vibration damper bots,
10. Using a socket wrench and a long lever, loosen the hub cap. Note that the cap is very tight.
11. Unscrew the hub cap and remove the spring washers.
12. Using a suitable puller, remove the hub from the crankshaft.
13. Where provided, remove the woodruff key from the crankshaft.
Installation
14. Where provided, install the woodruff key into the groove on the crankshaft.
15. To fit the hub onto the crankshaft, it must be heated to a temperature of approximately 50°C.
16. When the hub is heated to the required temperature (it is possible to achieve a positive result by immersing the hub in very hot water for some time), align the groove on the hub with the key on the shaft and install the hub onto the end of the crankshaft.
17. Lubricate the spring washers, then install them with the convex sides facing the bolt head (see fig. 5.17).
Fig. 5.17. The convex surface of the crankshaft pulley hub washers must be facing the bolt head
18. Lubricate the threads of the hub caps with oil, then install the hub cap.
19. Screw the hub cap on, holding it from turning with a device. Tighten the hub cap to the required torque. Be careful not to get injured.
20. Install the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper as described earlier in this paragraph.
