Removal

Note: A new gasket may be required during installation.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Raise the hood to the fully open position.

3. Unfasten the latches and remove the plastic cover from the top of the distributor (see fig. 4.3).

4. Disconnect the high tension wires from the spark plugs, making sure they are numbered.

5. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry the high-voltage wire housing off the camshaft cover and move it to one side (do not disconnect the wires from the body). Do not disconnect the wires from the distributor cap unless required for further work. If wires are disconnected from the cap, make sure they are numbered so that they can be reinstalled without confusion.

6. Disconnect the camshaft cover ventilation hose from the air cleaner.

7. Disconnect the small ventilation hose from the camshaft cover.

8. Unscrew the eight camshaft cover mounting bolts and remove the washers.

9. Lift the cover off the cylinder head. If the cover is stuck, try to rock it by hand and, if necessary, tap it gently with a wooden mallet - be careful, as the cover is easily damaged.

10. Remove the gasket.

Installation

11. Check the condition of the gasket and, where provided, the seals on the /swallow disks. Replace if necessary. The seals on the sealing disks must be correctly positioned and the seal joint must lie flat (without bending) around the circumference of the disk.

12. Install the gasket into the grooves on the camshaft cover, starting from the front and back.

13. Install the cover onto the cylinder head, making sure the gasket is seated correctly, then tighten the mounting bolts.

14. Gradually tighten the bolts to the required torque in order.

15. Connect the ventilation hoses.

16. Snap the spark plug wire housing into place on the camshaft cover, then connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs and, where necessary, to the distributor cap. Check that the wires are connected correctly as they were before removal.

17. Install the plastic cover onto the distributor cap.

18. Connect the negative battery terminal.
