General information
1. 4-cylinder engines do not have a damper, while 5-cylinder engines have a one-piece damper. The removal and installation procedure is the same for both types.
Crankshaft pulley/damper
Removal
2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
3. Raise the engine hood until it stops as described in chapter 11.
4. Remove the radiator as described in chapter 3.
5. Remove the accessory drive belt as described in chapter 1B.
6. Loosen and remove the mounting bolts and remove the pulley/damper. If necessary, hold the pulley/damper with a socket or wrench on the hub mounting bolt.
Installation
7. The installation procedure is the reverse of the removal procedure; also install the accessory drive belt as described in chapter 1B, and install the radiator as described in chapter 3.
Hub
Removal
Caution: The hub mounting bolt is very difficult to remove. A special tool may be needed to hold the hub while you remove the bolt. Do not attempt this job with an inappropriate or random tool, as injury or damage may result.
Caution: When installing to ensure the specified in "Technical data "a torque wrench will be required to tighten the hub. A puller may be required to remove the hub.
8. Remove the crankshaft pulley/damper as described earlier in this chapter.
9. Prepare a fixture to hold the hub. A suitable fixture can be made from two strips of steel of different lengths, connected by a large screw as an axle. Secure the fixture to the hub using the pulley/damper to hub mounting bolts (see fig. 5.9).

10. Using a socket wrench and a suitable extension, loosen the hub mounting bolt. Note that the bolt is tight.
11. Remove the bolt and four spring washers or, if used, the large conical washer.
12. Remove the hub from the crankshaft. If necessary, use a suitable puller.
Installation
13. Align the hole in the hub with the stud on the crankshaft flange and slide the hub onto the crankshaft.
14. On models that use spring washers, they should be lubricated and then installed with the convex side facing the bolt head (see fig. 5.14).
Fig. 5.14. The crankshaft pulley/vibration damper hub washers should be installed with the convex side facing the bolt head
15. On models with a conical washer under the hub mounting bolt head, the washer should be installed with the larger diameter side facing the hub.
16. Lubricate the threads and insert the hub mounting bolt.
17. Fix the holding device to the hub in the same way as during removal, then tighten the hub mounting bolt to the appropriate tightening torque. Do this carefully to avoid damage and destruction.
18. Install the pulley/damper as described earlier in this chapter.
