All models are equipped with front and rear disc brakes. The anti-lock wheel braking system (ABS) is installed as standard equipment on later models and was offered as an option on some early models (please refer to the relevant paragraph for information).
Note: On models equipped with the Automatic Stability Regulation (ASR) system, this function is also performed by the ABS. The front disc brakes on all models covered in this manual are actuated by a sliding single-piston caliper. This design ensures that equal pressure is applied to each pad.
On all models, the rear disc brakes are actuated by a fixed cylinder with opposing pistons. The parking brake provides independent mechanical actuation of the rear brakes. A drum and shoes are mounted in the center of each brake disc. The parking brake is actuated by a lever, which in turn actuates the shoes via two cables.
Note: When working on any element of the brake system, act carefully and methodically. When disassembling any part of the hydraulic system, maintain sterile cleanliness. If in doubt about the condition of the parts, always replace them (if possible, a set for the entire axle). Use only genuine Mercedes-Benz parts or at least parts of proven quality. Remember the precautions in the section "Safety first!" and in the relevant parts of this chapter relating to the hazards of asbestos dust and brake fluid.
