Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) Cars — Abstract (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W220)

The new Mercedes-Benz luxury saloon appeared on the market in September 1998.

The production of the new car includes many technical innovations, including a number of auxiliary systems offered for the first time.

"Distronic" automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

The electronic "Comand" system makes it easier to use the car radio, telephone, navigation system and television.

The instrument panel is equipped with a central display that allows individual adjustment of various vehicle functions and informs the driver about this.

Smart card of inductive authorization system "Keyless-Go" allows you to do without traditional door keys and ignition keys.

Comfortable, ventilated seats with multi-contour backrests are installed.

The standard side airbags above the side windows and in all doors provide reliable protection for passengers in the event of a side collision.

The design of the S-Class cars harmonizes perfectly with the sophisticated technology and emphasizes the most important properties inherent in the Sedan: elegance, dynamics, quality and comfort. The most important stylistic elements are the coupe-like silhouette, which gives the new S-Class a sporty and at the same time elegant look, as well as the attractive front end of the car with characteristic headlights and a typical radiator grille.

At the same time as the length of the passenger compartment has increased by 17 mm, the length of the body of the new S-Class has decreased by 75 mm. The length of the passenger compartment of the model with an extended wheelbase is 37 mm longer than that of the previous model.

The car is available in two body styles: with a standard and extended wheelbase (2965 and 3085 mm), with three options of installed V-shaped petrol engines (six, eight and twelve cylinders).

Diesel engines – in-line 6-cylinder and V-shaped 8-cylinder engines with direct injection and system "Common-Rail" - have been installed since the end of 1999.

The petrol engines of the new S-Class, thanks to their design with 3 valves and 2 spark plugs per cylinder and the use of light alloys, consume 13-17 percent less fuel than the engines of the previous model.

Automatic cylinder deactivation in the S 500 models reduces the fuel consumption of the V8 engine by a further 7 percent. The exhaust emissions level not only meets future EU standards, but also the strict US regulations for low-emission vehicles (ULEV).

The suspension with pneumatic damping elements included in the basic package achieves the highest level of driving comfort. The combination of pneumatic suspension with an adaptive damping system automatically changes the rigidity of the shock absorbers, depending on the unevenness of the road.

Multi-link independent rear suspension.

To ensure driving safety, the new S-Class is equipped with an electronic anti-skid system (stability stabilization - ESP), Brake Assist (BAS) and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS).

The basic braking system is hydraulic, dual-circuit with a vacuum booster.

Braking mechanisms - disc, ventilated on all wheels. A foot parking brake is used.

Steering mechanism - with recirculating balls.

Excellent aerodynamics and the use of lightweight materials have contributed to lower fuel consumption. Compared to the previous model of the same configuration, the new S-Class weighs 300 kg less. However, the weight reduction does not come at the expense of safety and comfort. On the contrary, thanks to the use of high-strength steel and additional protective elements, as well as the development of large deformation zones, the new S-Class provides even greater safety than the previous model.
