Removal and installation the front gearbox cover (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126)

Remove the clutch release bearing from the guide tube on the front gearbox cover. Pull it off the clutch housing and remove the clutch release fork.

Remove the clutch housing.

Remove the bolts securing the front gearbox cover.

Remove the bolts securing the front gearbox cover.


Remove the cover. Pay attention to the spacer washers for the primary shaft (a) and for the intermediate shaft (b).

Unscrew the pipe for the clutch release bearing.

Remove the sealing ring from the lid.

Clean the gearbox cover.

Press a new sealing ring tightly into the cover at the dividing surface.

Tighten the bearing pipe mounting bolts (d) by hand.

Tighten the bearing pipe mounting bolts (d) by hand.


Insert the spacer or compensation washers (a) and (b) and the new paper gasket (e) into the cover (c) and glue them with grease to facilitate installation.



Lubricate the edges of the sealing ring (oil seal) and the point of contact with the primary shaft with consistent grease.

Carefully place the cover onto the input shaft.

Tighten the mounting bolts and tighten them crosswise. The threaded holes must be free of grease and the bolt threads must not be lubricated with the hardening sealant.

Place the clutch housing on the guide edges of the front cover and ensure the exact position of the dividing plane.

Place spring washers on the mounting bolts, screw them in and tighten them evenly.

Tighten the bearing pipe mounting bolts.

Install the bearing and clutch release fork.
