Replacing the coolant (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126)

0
Contents: Drain ↡ Filling ↡
The coolant should be replaced as part of maintenance every 3 years.

Caution: If the fluid is drained during repair, it should be saved for reuse, as it contains antifreeze and anticorrosive additives.

Drain

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Set both switches of the heating system in the cabin to maximum heating power. For cars with automatic climate control, press the "DEF" button.

Turn the radiator cap to the left until it stops and release excess pressure from the cooling system. Then turn the cap further and remove it completely.

Caution: When the engine is hot, place a thick cloth on the cap before opening it to avoid scalding from hot liquid or steam. Remove the cap only when the coolant temperature is below 90°C.

Place a clean drain pan under the radiator and remove the drain bolt (1) on the radiator.

Remove the drain bolt from the engine block. It is located on the right side, approximately halfway down the exhaust manifold.

Drain the coolant completely.

Screw the drain bolt into the engine block with a new gasket and tighten to 30 Nm.

Tighten the drain bolt on the radiator with a torque of 1.5 to 2 Nm. To do this, insert a coin into the bolt slot and tighten it by hand.

Filling

Filling

Fill the coolant through the radiator filler neck to the "cold liquid" mark (C). (A) - filling marking. (B) - "warm liquid". Leave the radiator neck open at first.

Connect the ground wire to the battery.

Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens (coolant temperature 90-100°C). While doing this, give the gas jerkily.

Caution: When the coolant temperature is 60°-70°C, close the radiator filler neck.

Check the cooling system for tight connections of hoses, drain bolts and coolant pump.
