The installation locations of the dampers are shown in Fig. 48. To remove the dampers, you need an impact puller, which is used to extract the damper mounting axles. Pay attention to the axle length, since in later engines the axle length was changed.

To remove the damper in the right cylinder head, you must do the following:

Remove the generator together with the mounting parts.

Insert the pin into the hole as shown in Fig. 47 and screw it into the damper axle; use an impact puller to remove the damper axle.

Remove the damper.

If replacement is necessary, pay attention to the correspondence of the sizes of the new and old axles.

Install the damper, insert the axle into the hole and, using a screwdriver, change the position of the damper and move the axle into the second hole.

Perform the remaining work in reverse order.

When replacing the two dampers in the left cylinder head, do the following:

Turn the crankshaft until TDC is reached in the first cylinder.

Remove the ignition distributor.

Remove the power steering pump together with the mounting parts, do not disconnect the pipes.

Similarly to the above, replace the damper in the left cylinder head.

The dampers in the right and left cylinder heads are not interchangeable.

To remove and install the damper on the cylinder block, you need to dismantle the drive cover.

Oil pump drive chain tensioner

The oil pump drive chain tensioner can be removed after dismantling the camshaft drive cover. Then the fastening parts are unscrewed and the tensioner is removed. Installation is performed in the reverse order.
