Removal and installation the rear wheel hub and adjusting the hub bearings (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

Work on adjusting the hub bearings can be performed on the rear suspension installed on the vehicle.

Removal



Loosen the axle shaft mounting bolt and, using the device shown in Fig. 222, press the axle shaft out of the rear wheel hub. If the rear suspension is installed on the vehicle, secure the axle shaft with a wire loop for ease of further work.

Remove the brake caliper and brake disc, in this case you can remove the parking brake pads.

Loosen the hub mounting lock nuts.

While holding the hub from turning, use the key 115 589 02 07 00 to loosen the hub mounting nut. If you don't have a key, you can loosen the nut using a chisel with a blunt end and a hammer. In this case, the nut must be replaced during installation. Fig. 231 shows loosening the hub mounting nut using a special tool.

Remove the oil seal ring.

Using a puller, remove the seal from the hub housing.

Remove the hub from the housing.

Remove the inner bearing ring and spacer sleeve.



Press the outer seal out of the hub housing.

Press the outer bearing outer race out of the hub housing.

Using a punch, press out the outer ring of the inner bearing.

Press out the inner race of the outer bearing from the rear wheel hub.

Check all parts for further use. Pay special attention to the condition of the working surfaces under the seals on the hub and on the seal ring. Replace worn parts.

Installation



Using a piece of pipe of the appropriate diameter, press the inner ring of the outer bearing onto the hub.

Press two outer bearing rings into the hub housing.

Apply sealant to the outer surface of the outer seal and press it into the hub body.

Fill the space between the two outer bearing rings with 50 g of multi-purpose grease.

Place a new spacer sleeve on the hub and install the hub into the housing.

Place the inner ring of the inner bearing on the hub.

Apply grease to the working edges of the seal and apply sealant to the outer surface of the seal.

Using the tool, press in the inner bearing ring and seal.

Install the oil seal ring and tighten the new mounting nut.
