CDI (Common Rail Direct Injection) is a global contribution to diesel technology. The CDI principle allows for a significant reduction in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. A diesel engine based on this principle also provides improved driving comfort due to reduced noise compared to modern pre-chamber engines. Therefore, Mercedes-Benz diesel engines (Fig. 1.10) with direct fuel injection, operating on the Common Rail principle, are significantly superior to previous models.
Like all Mercedes E-Class diesels, the 4-cylinder diesel engines are equipped with a catalytic analyzer and an exhaust gas removal system.
