Checking and removing brake lights (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

0
When both brake lights fail, the brake light switch is usually the cause. It is located at the top of the brake pedal in the driver's footwell. When the brake pedal is pressed, the push pin comes out of the switch housing, the switch contacts close, in turn closing the circuit leading to the brake lights. When the pedal is released, the pin returns to its original position, the lights go out.

Sequence of works

1. Remove the trim in the driver's footwell.

2. Remove the switch connector.

3. Check the switch with an ohmmeter. When you press the brake pedal, its contacts (4 mm) should close the circuit.

4. There is one more additional contact in the switch (disconnecting). The closing contacts near it are smaller (2.5 mm). When the brake pedal is released, the circuit is opened due to the opening contact.

5. To remove the plastic switch buffer, press on it with a screwdriver.

6. Turn the switch and remove it.

7. Before installation, press the switch push pin with force (about 50 N) pull it all the way out.
