Contents: Removal ↡ Installation ↡
Attention! If the tensioner is loosened on the hexagon, it must be removed, otherwise the control chain will be excessively tightened when screwed in.

Removal

4-cylinder engine

4-cylinder engine

1. Remove the fan hydraulic clutch.

2. Remove the cylinder head cover.

3. Remove the fan shroud.

4. Set the engine 20° below the TDC of the first cylinder. To do this, set the gearbox to idle and apply the parking brake. Turn the crankshaft using a spanner with a SW27 socket at the central bolt of the crankshaft belt pulley in the direction of engine rotation, i.e. clockwise, until the markings match. The length of the spanner socket must be more than 42 mm.

4. Set the engine 20° below the TDC of the first cylinder. To do this, set the gearbox to idle and…

5. Secure the exhaust camshaft from turning by inserting a suitable rod (Mercedes-N 111589011500) into the camshaft flange hole (78) through the hole in the camshaft bearing cap. If the chain is removed, secure the intake camshaft in the same way.

Caution: If you do not insert the locking pin (arrow), adjust the basic position of the camshaft.

6. Cover the generator with film or a cloth.

6-cylinder engine

7. Remove the V-ribbed belt.

8. If necessary, loosen and move the air pump away from the top of the chain tensioner.

9. Loosen the screw plug (1) by one turn using a SW10 socket wrench.

10. Unscrew the chain tensioner together with part (14) and remove.

11. Unscrew the screw plug (1) with the sealing ring (5). Remove the compression spring (8) together with the pin (7).

12. Push back the pressure pin (10) with the locking spring (9).

13. Clean the parts individually thoroughly with fuel and check for further suitability for use (risks, raid). Replace damaged parts, if necessary, replace the chain tensioner as a set.

Installation

1. Screw the chain tensioner housing (14) with a new sealing ring (15) to the engine block. The tightening torque for a 4-cylinder engine is 80 N·m, for a 6-cylinder engine - 50 N·m.

2. Assemble the parts (7-10) as before disassembling them and insert them into the assembled chain tensioner.

3. Tighten the screw plug (1) with a new sealing ring (5) to a torque of 40 Nm, thus compressing the spring.

4-cylinder engine

Caution: Remove the locking rod from the camshaft flange.

4. Install the cylinder head cover.

5. Remove the protective film from the generator.

6. Install the fan hydraulic clutch.

7. Start the engine and check the chain tensioner for leaks.

6-cylinder engine

4. Secure the air pump.

5. Put on the ribbed V-belt.

6. Start the engine and check the chain tensioner for leaks.
