The Mercedes body is self-supporting. The base parts, side parts, roof and rear wings of the car are welded together. The windshield and rear windows are glued. Therefore, major faults can only be repaired in a specialized workshop.
The engine hood, trunk lid, doors and front fenders of the car are bolted together and can be easily replaced. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the proper air gap dimensions during installation, otherwise, for example, the door may knock or there may be increased wind noise when the car is moving. The air gap must in any case run parallel, i.e. the distance between the body parts along the entire length of the air gap must be the same. A deviation of 0.5 mm is permissible.
Safety instructions for work on the body
When carrying out welding or other work that generates sparks near the battery, the battery must be removed.
Welding, hard soldering or soft soldering is not permitted on parts of a filled air conditioner. This also applies to welding and soldering on a vehicle if there is a risk that the air conditioner parts will heat up.
Caution! The liquid circulation circuit in the air conditioner must not be opened.
Remove the protective coating from the underbody of the vehicle and sealants in the repair areas using a rotating wire brush or heat it up with hot air to a maximum of 180°C and remove with a spatula.
When repairing the varnish coating, the car can be heated with an open drying oven up to a maximum of 80°C. Otherwise, the electronic control devices in the car may be damaged.
