2. With irregular maintenance, the engine may fail at times. This can happen if you have purchased a used car, the previous owner of which did not comply with the terms of service. In this case, it may be necessary to perform some work beyond the normal scheduled maintenance.
3. If there is a suspicion of engine wear, you should first check the compression, which will give preliminary information about the condition of the parts of the cylinder-piston group. This check will provide a basis for planning future work. If, for example, a compression test indicates significant engine wear, the routine maintenance recommended in this chapter will not improve engine performance and will be a waste of time and money. In this case, it is wiser to decide on a more serious repair, the description of which is given in chapter 2.
4. When the engine is unstable, the following operations usually help to improve its operation:
- A) Clean, inspect and test the battery (see section "Weekly check").
- b) Check all fluids related to the engine (see section "Weekly check").
- V) Check the condition of the accessory drive belt (paragraph 8).
- G) Replace spark plugs (paragraph 4).
- d) Check the condition of the air filter and, if necessary, replace the filter element (paragraph 30). V) Check fuel filter (paragraph 31).
- and) Check the condition of all hoses and look for fluid leaks (paragraph 7).
5. If the above steps do not improve engine performance, perform the following steps in addition:
- A) Check the battery charging system (see relevant part Chapters 5).
- b) Check the ignition system (see relevant part Chapters 5).
- V) Check the fuel system (see relevant part Chapters 4).
