Routine care and maintenance — general information (Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463)

0
The primary focus of this chapter has been to help the amateur mechanic maintain his vehicle in a state of maximum performance, economy, safety, and reliability. The chapter continues with a complete schedule of routine vehicle maintenance procedures, as well as sections describing the maintenance of individual vehicle systems. The sections provide descriptions of visual inspections, adjustments, component replacements, and other helpful tips. The engine bay illustrations (see Section Schedule of current maintenance). Having familiarized yourself with the mileage-time chart and the recommendations given below, the reader will receive a clear program of actions capable of ensuring a long and reliable service of the car. Remember that the implementation of only individual points of the outlined plan with disregard for the others is not capable of giving the expected result.

Current care

During vehicle maintenance, the reader will soon see that many procedures can (and should) be combined due to the similarity of the actions involved in their implementation. For example, if the vehicle is raised above the ground to lubricate the chassis, it makes sense to simultaneously check the condition of the exhaust, suspension, steering, and fuel system components. If the wheels are removed for other work, it is reasonable to also assess the degree of wear on the brakes. Finally, renting a special tool does not make sense for performing just one procedure: if it becomes necessary to use a torque wrench to tighten, for example, spark plugs, it would be a good idea to also check the tightening forces of as many available fasteners as possible, the tightening forces of which are among the critical parameters.

The first step in carrying out a vehicle maintenance program is self-preparation. Carefully study the materials of all Sections related to the upcoming procedures, then prepare all the necessary materials, equipment and tools. If you are afraid of encountering problems when performing some specific work, consult a service station or a person who has already performed this work.

Note. Every time the car is serviced at a service station, the fault memory interrogation device reads the fault codes of the electronic engine control devices, ABS, SRS and anti-theft system - try to visit the official service stations from time to time. It should be remembered that some faults, such as failed engine control system sensors, do not lead to a noticeable decrease in the car's performance. The control devices have an emergency operation mode or operate on average values stored in memory, which often cannot be detected by the driver independently. The fault memory interrogation is carried out through a special diagnostic connector DLC.
